Choosing an Online Auction Company? Don’t Fall for View Counts

How to Judge an Online Auction: Not Views, but Bids, Participants, Sell-Through and Sold Prices

When you are choosing an auction company, ask what happened in its completed auctions. How many people actually bid? How much bidding did each lot attract? What percentage sold, and at what prices?

September 2026 BidRush Highlights

Watchlisters show interest. Bids drive prices. Sold results tell the story.

Even a busy open house can make the audience look larger than the pool of potential buyers: one household may arrive with spouses and kids, while curious passersby stop in for a look. Twenty visitors do not necessarily mean twenty potential buyers.

Auction views deserve the same scrutiny. A view count can overstate distinct buyer interest: repeat visits may be counted separately, and some visitors are simply browsing. Like open-house attendance, the total alone does not tell you how many people are ready to make an offer.

That is why online auction sellers should look at watchlisters, unique bidders and bids per lot, then check how that activity translates into final sold prices and the percentage of lots sold.

Below are a cross section of BidRush auctions. Each example shows bidding activity, participation and final sale results, with a link to the auction.

Four numbers to ask for before you choose an auction company

  1. Bids per lot: Total bids divided by all eligible lots offered, including unsold lots. Read this alongside unique bidders: one person can place several bids, and bidding systems and increments affect the count.
  2. Participants: Unique people who bid, watchlisted, or did both. Bidders demonstrate willingness to buy; watchlisters express interest. Someone who does both is counted once in the participant total.
  3. Sell-through: The percentage of offered lots that sold. If you need to clear a property, also ask how many lots remained unsold and whether purchased items were collected.
  4. Final sold prices: Look at comparable items, average sold-lot price and total auction sales. A standout result is useful context, but the mix and condition of items matter.

Burlington

In Burlington, 279 participants engaged with the auction and 256 lots sold. Featured below is Royal Copenhagen dinnerware that sold for CAD $370.

  • 256 of 283 lots sold · 90.5% sell-through
  • 2,094 bids · 7.4 bids per lot
  • 279 participants · 127 unique bidders · 226 unique watchlisters
  • Total final bids: CAD $10,072.25
  • Average sold-lot price: CAD $39.34

A note on Burlington’s starting bids: This auction used higher starting bids, which can help explain its lower bids-per-lot figure and the lower sell rate. A higher opening price leaves fewer bidding steps to the final price and can discourage buyers from participating. Think of listing a home at a high asking price: some buyers may pass it over before booking a viewing, reducing the opportunity for competing offers, and often the home goes unsold, sitting on the market until the listing expires, only to be re-listed again and again. BidRush recommends $1 starting bids to encourage participation and give competition room to develop. Starting prices should therefore be considered when comparing bids per lot; these auction totals alone do not establish how much they affected Burlington’s results.
