Description

authentic 19th-century European genre oil painting on canvas depicting a charming street urchin or newsboy. The barefoot young boy is beautifully rendered wearing wire-rimmed glasses, a classic vest, and a wide-brimmed cap, completely absorbed in reading a copy of The Times newspaper. The artwork beautifully captures the popular late-19th-century academic trend of romanticizing daily working-class street life. It is presented in an ornate, period-correct gilt wood frame featuring elegant leaf-and-dart relief molding. The painting is prominently hand-signed by the artist "E. Soulié" in red script in the lower right corner. This signature corresponds to the 19th-century French genre painter Eugène Soulié, recognized for his highly detailed narrative works and character portraits in Paris. Canvas has raised parts where frame meets it along sides.
