Each measures 14.5 x 11.5 inches. Gullah artwork blends African-rooted traditions, Lowcountry life, and storytelling, expressed through paintings, sweetgrass basketry, mixed media, and folk art that preserve the heritage of the Gullah-Geechee people. Gullah art is deeply tied to the heritage, history, and everyday life of the Gullah-Geechee people of the South Carolina and Georgia Lowcountry. It often functions as a visual storyteller — similar to an African griot — depicting community, spirituality, land, and resilience. Faceless figures, symbolizing how enslaved Gullah ancestors were stripped of individuality but not spirit. Vibrant colors and scenes of coastal life, family gatherings, church traditions, and agricultural work. Mixed media, including tin, wood, and found materials, used to honor the belief that nothing created by God should be wasted. Sweetgrass basketry, one of the oldest West African art forms in America, made from sweetgrass, pine needles, and palmetto leaf.
