Canute Caliste (1914–2005) was a highly celebrated naïve (primitive style) folk painter from the Caribbean.Essential Biographical DetailsOrigin: He spent his life on Carriacou, a tiny island belonging to Grenada.Early Inspiration: He claimed his artistic journey began at age nine after a vision of a mermaid. Mermaids remained a signature reoccurring subject in his art.Artistic Style: He painted primarily with acrylics or oils on hardboard and discarded wood slabs. His work features charmingly flattened perspectives, distinctive hand-painted text captions, and vibrant depictions of island folklore, daily maritime activities, and deep spiritual visions. Other piece has writing in back but cannot read signature.
