Dog Mountain

Captain Spindler was the captain of the German ship SA Libau. That was a captured British ship converted into a German warship. The ship was disguised by the Germans as a Norwegian cruiser and cargo transporter. This card was to commemorate the famous 1916 attempt by the Germans for for the Libau to carry a ship full of weapons to give to the Irish revolutionaries for the Easter 1916 revolution. The British were lucky and the revolutionaries radios were not working so they could not be notified. The ship was there waiting for the weapons to be picked up. This ship finally left and confronted with a British Navy they dumped and scuttled the ship and surrendered to the British to spend the rest of the war in a prisoner camp. Captain Spindler became famous from this incident and wrote a book on it, which is this photo postcard advertised.
