Description

Never seen one like this with a drawer under the seat, and the back and seat are thatched with wood veneer. The seat has obvious damage due to age, but could easily be covered with fabric. The drawer was meant to hold sewing notions. Here's more info: An antique sewing rocker—also known as a nursing rocker or lady's rocker—is a specialized, smaller-scale rocking chair designed without arms to give users full range of motion for hand-sewing, knitting, or nursing. These chairs were a staple in American and English homes during the 19th and early 20th centuries, prized for their functionality and space-saving size. Bienenstock Furniture Library Key Characteristics To identify a genuine sewing rocker, look for these defining physical traits: Armless Design: The most prominent feature, allowing voluminous skirts to fit and preventing elbows or sewing needles from hitting the chair while working. Low Seat Height: Typically sits significantly lower than standard chairs, with seat heights often around 12 to 15 inches from the floor. Smaller Dimensions: Generally more petite and lightweight than parlor rockers, making them easy to move into bedrooms or sunny corners. Varied Seats: Antique versions often featured caned, rushed, or needlepoint seats. Notable Styles & Markers Antique sewing rockers followed the major furniture movements of their time: Windsor Style: Handcrafted in the mid-1800s with saddle seats and spindled backs, often made from mixed hardwoods like maple and oak. Mission/Arts & Crafts: Popularized around 1900, these feature clean lines and solid oak construction. Authentic pieces by Gustav Stickley are highly collectible and often signed or marked under the seat. Victorian: Often more ornate, these might feature carved details, upholstered backs, or "ladderback" horizontal slats. Built-in Storage: Rare "folk art" versions include a small drawer under the seat for thread, needles, and sewing Antique Signed Gustav Stickley Antique Mission Oak Arts & Crafts Sewing Rocking Chair, Circa 1900 A gorgeous antique Mission or Arts & Crafts sewing or nursing rocker By Gustav Stickley USA, Circa 1900 Solid quarter sawn oak, wi...

The studio space is inside a Victorian 5 Story Building on Water Street, downtown Port Townsend. The studio is 27 steps up, 27 down, and no elevator. Parking is limited because it's a busy retail/restaurant district. The studio must be completely empty by Sunday, so PLEASE do not bid unless you are 100% sure you can make arrangements to pick up on Saturday, 5/2. If you have larger items or multiple lots, please call me so I can anticipate your arrival. I'm working on hiring 2 to 4 strong men to help bring down all the larger heavier pieces, but I still urge everyone to bring someone with you to help carry down lots. My team that will be inside the studio will not be leaving to help carry down, so please be prepared to make your own trips. You can always stage your lots on the sidewalk and then go get your car to load. I'll be doing my best to save two parking spaces at a time. Bring Cash to tip those strong men. This is a fantastic auction and is worth the extra effort!
