Lots of info on this highly collectible set from the web, but first, a note on the condition of the granite or marble board..it does have a crack as seen in the pictures. The chess pieces are are indeed a heavy brass or pewter and fit inside the drawer. The chairs do not feature the carved back piece. The owner used this as a sort of altar and the chairs were folded up in the garage. Putting them back together and discovering this was a true find! Here's more info: Savonarola chess tables and matching chairs are highly collectible Renaissance Revival furniture sets known for their dramatic, sculptural silhouettes. Named after the 15th-century Florentine friar Girolamo Savonarola, these sets feature chairs with a distinct interlocking, serpentine X-frame design that can often be collapsed or folded for storage. Because they combine intricate old-world craftsmanship with functional gaming, vintage and antique 3-piece sets typically range in price from $1,450 USD to over $4,200 USD.Features to Look ForThe Chairs: True Savonarola-style chairs are characterized by multiple curved wooden slats that cross to form the base, often terminating in hand-carved lion heads, gargoyles, or paw feet. The Table: Usually spans 24 to 26 inches square. Many styles feature an inlaid wooden chessboard, side drawers to store pieces, or a reversible top that flips over to reveal a backgammon or card-playing surface.Materials: Authentic vintage Italian reproductions and 19th-century antiques are most commonly constructed from solid oak, walnut, or fruitwood, and are frequently paired with heavy brass, pewter, or hand-carved wooden chess pieces
