Description

This lot consists of a matched pair of original American political satire prints published in Puck magazine, one of the most important and influential illustrated humor and political journals in the United States during the late 19th century. The darker gray mat is the color of the mats. The other photos were taken in very bright light so it washed out the color of the mats. Both prints retain their original Puck mastheads and captions and are mounted individually in matching gray mats and sealed in protective shrink wrap. The first print depicts a large ostrich labeled “Republican Party” with the caption “Stand-Pat Policy” and the printed title “Protection” at the lower margin. The second print depicts a political caricature referencing the Democratic Party, Populism and the Free Silver movement, with visible banner text including “The Moral Issue,” “Free Silver,” and “Kansas City Platform.” At the top of each image, the original Puck publication masthead is clearly visible, including: “PUCK” “Puck Building, New York” “Price Ten Cents” These are authentic period prints removed from original issues of Puck magazine and later archivally matted for display. The two works are offered together as a matched political history pair. Frames are not included. • Original magazine prints • Late 19th century (not mid-20th century) • American political satire • Professionally matted and shrink-wrapped • Sold here as a pair Condition Report: Both prints are sealed in shrink wrap and could not be removed for direct inspection. Based on visible surfaces through the wrap: Images appear complete with no missing sections No visible tears or holes observed Light overall age toning consistent with 19th-century paper Minor edge wear visible along margins beneath the mat Shrink wrap shows surface rippling and light scuffing Mats show light corner wear and small edge compressions Overall condition is good, consistent with original late-19th-century magazine prints.
